CCIA’s Don’t Break What Works Campaign Releases Statement Regarding Possible Efforts to Block Amazon’s iRobot Acquisition

Washington, D.C. (1/19/2023) – CCIA’s “Don’t Break What Works” campaign released the following statement following reports that competition officials from the European Commission (EC) may block Amazon’s purchase of Roomba maker iRobot:

“Reports that the European Commission may block an American company from acquiring a struggling U.S.-based vacuum maker are extremely concerning. Not only would this result in fewer options for consumers, it would also provide a competitive advantage to Chinese companies at the expense of an American one,” said Chandler Smith Costello, a spokeswoman for the Don’t Break What Works campaign.

“We have already seen a pattern in which European regulators have singled out U.S.-based businesses with discriminatory regulations. Reports that the European Commission may attempt to block this acquisition underscores the need for the Biden administration to take a stronger stand for American businesses on the global stage and push back on international efforts to weaken U.S. companies’ ability to compete abroad.”
