Don’t Break What Works Campaign Releases Statement on the Reintroduction of the Open App Markets Act

Washington, D.C. (06/24/2025) – The Don’t Break What Works campaign released the following statement after it was announced that the Open App Markets Act (OAMA) will be reintroduced:

“OAMA has fundamental problems that put consumers, small developers and dynamic markets in jeopardy to the benefit of a few large app makers. The fact is that consumers overwhelmingly prefer the privacy and cybersecurity protections the current app store ecosystem provides. OAMA would break those protections, place Americans’ sensitive information at risk, and empower bad actors to abuse consumers’ private data,” said Don’t Break What Works spokeswoman Kate Brown. “The approach inherent to this legislation, which seeks to punish successful American companies for providing products that American consumers love, is deeply flawed, and yet another example of how these targeted attacks that supposedly support competition ultimately hurt the American consumer.”

“Concerningly, OAMA rehashes the same deeply flawed and heavy-handed European-style regulations that some U.S. lawmakers have attempted to import in the past. Previously, Congress has rejected these policies because they threaten to harm consumers and break digital products and services that Americans love and rely on. Lawmakers should continue to push back against these regulations,” she continued.
