WASHINGTON, D.C. (3/19/2025) – Today, the Don’t Break What Works campaign released the following statement regarding the enforcement actions taken today by the European Commission (EC) that impact leading American tech companies under the European Union’s (EU) Digital Markets Act (DMA):
“American leaders should be concerned that the EU actions single out some of the United States’ most successful and innovative companies, threatening to break popular products and services that consumers use worldwide. For example, today’s decision includes language that could require U.S. firms to hand over intellectual property and sensitive consumer data to third parties, putting users’ private information at risk” said Kate Brown, a spokeswoman for the Don’t Break What Works campaign. “The administration has signaled it will stand up for American companies targeted in this way. We hope U.S. policymakers recognize that this decision threatens to stifle leading U.S. companies’ ability to innovate and develop new technologies while giving foreign businesses who don’t have to play by the same rules a leg up, undermining our nation’s economic interests and global competitiveness.”
“Despite the risks these policies pose to consumers, some Congressional lawmakers have tried to import EU-style competition policy to the United States. We are hopeful that the administration will champion policies that support consumers and competition,” she continued.
