CCIA’s Don’t Break What Works Campaign Releases Statement on the Reintroduction of AICOA

Washington, D.C. (06/15/2023) – CCIA’s “Don’t Break What Works” campaign released the following statement regarding the reintroduction of the deeply-flawed American Innovation and Choice Online Act (AICOA):

“Last Congress, AICOA failed to even progress to the floor of the House or Senate for a vote after facing sharp bipartisan criticism from lawmakers and experts over serious policy problems concerning the bill’s negative impact on the economy, privacy, security, and content moderation,” said Don’t Break What Works spokeswoman Chandler Smith Costello. “Not only that, but five senators have chosen to get off this deeply flawed and misguided bill. Despite all of that, the small list of the bill’s sponsors have decided to reintroduce a nearly identical copy of AICOA despite all of its problems without addressing the underlying issues that prevented the bill from garnering the necessary support to pass in the first place.

“The fact remains that this flawed bill attacking some of our nation’s most successful companies poses a significant threat to U.S. competitiveness and national security, and would break free and inexpensive products and services that help consumers cut costs, like free Google services and Amazon’s two-day shipping, that Americans love.

“Unfortunately, this iteration of AICOA doubles down on the same problems that plagued it in the previous Congress and reaffirms the same fundamentally harmful and unpopular policies.”
